Google AdSense, Google’s advertising program that lets webmasters display ads from Google’s extensive list of advertisers, has taken the Internet by storm. Through this successful program, unobtrusive text-based ads are served in member sites, who then earn a commission every time someone clicks on the advertisers’ links.

At this point in time, the jury is still out on whether this program will continue to enjoy its initial success. That is why, through this article, we want to give you some highlights and insights on how the Google Adsense program has worked for us, one month after we signed up for it, so that we can use it as a checkpoint for future analysis.

Why is Google AdSense so Popular?

Google AdSense uses Google’s proprietary PageRank? search technology to deliver ads that are highly relevant to the content of a page. Google’s engine will scan through the content of the page to determine its topic, and will then serve ads that are relevant to the page’s content.

The pay-off per click varies widely depending on what each advertiser decides to offer, based on the profitability of their products and their expected conversion rate (percentage of clicks that deliver a sale). Google is not saying what the average pay-off is nor how does it share the revenue per click with their AdSense partners, but how much you will earn per click will really depends on the topic and the product being advertised. Products with profit margins of $3.00 for the advertiser will probably give you a smaller pay-off per click than a product with a $300 profit margin. Similarly, ads with high conversion rates will normally give you higher payouts than less effective ads, since they can afford to pay more dollars per click, with a portion of that money going to you.

The deal is depending on where your article gets republished your links may not be "live". Writing articles and posting them is a great way to drive traffic to your site. Search engines love it and if done correctly it will help drive new visitors to your site and get you listed higher in the search engines. The problem comes when article writers and authors and publishers don't all follow the same rules. The main problems are:

Original article not formatted correctly
Article copied and pasted into new webpage without links
New publisher doesn't make links live

Let us start with #1 "Original article not formatted correctly". Not all article sites are the same. On some sites you can simply put in plain text and it will format it correctly, paragraphs will be correct and it will recognize http://www.yoursite.com as a live link. Some sites you may need to format it all in html. Sometimes the easiest way to do that is type your article in a web design program such as "Dreamweaver" and then view the source and copy and paste the code. If you don't have access to such a program then you should learn a few basic html tags:

This is a "break" tag, The break tag is used when you want to end a line, but don't want to start a new paragraph. The break tag forces a line break wherever you place it, a very common tag and one that is recognized by most all article sites.

Imangine your article being reprinted 1000 times, a potential of 1000 back links to your site but without it being a clickable link you won't reap the benefits of those 1000 links. Your links to your sites should always be formatted this way:

2. Article copied and pasted into new webpage without links. Your article may be correctly formatted on the article site you posted to but when it is copied and pasted into a new webpage or ezine it may lose some of its formatting. Some of the better sites have a choice of "ezine ready", this will display your article in the correct html formatting which makes it easier to copy and paste.

3. New publisher doesn't make links live. All article sites have a policy that clearly states "you are free to republish the article as long as the links and author bio stays with the article" Some don't realize your links are no longer live or don't know to make them live. Others leave them off all together or don't make them live on purpose. Not much you can do except write to the website owner and request they make them live. Some will comply, some won't. Chalk it up to the cost of doing business. For every site that doesn't make your links live, 10 will.

Keep publishing! Writing articles and posting them across the internet is still a great way to drive traffic to your site. Content is king and website owners, and ezine publishers are hungry for fresh new original content.

My first entrepreneurial venture was with a very famous network marketing company a friend of mine recruited me to. I couldn't blame the company because other people were getting rich selling their products. I couldn't blame my upline because they hounded me every day to work the business. So I blame the dream!

You see, I was working to have that mansion and speedboat when I didn't really want a mansion or a speedboat. Sure, it would be nice to take a Hawaiian vacation every other week, but at that point in my life I was just wanting to be able to afford health insurance. My dream was not a Lamborgini; my dream was to pay off the Ford I was already driving. There is nothing wrong with having a multi-millionaire dream, but if that is not your dream it won't motivate you to do whatever it takes to be successful. My upline was keeping the dream in front of me, but it wasn't my dream.

I had to find out what motivated me. What would make me get out of my comfort zone, ignore the skepticism of family and friends, and persevere until I became successful? For me, it was to get out of debt, be able to afford braces for my kids, have health insurance, have funds set aside for college, and to be able to pay every bill the day it came in. Not millionaire stuff, but it was my dream. I despise debt and will do anything to get rid of it. I like speedboats but won't do anything to have one. And when I discovered that I hate debt more than I like speedboats, I found my dream.

We all know that you must define your why, but it must be your why. I would do absolutely anything in my power to ensure the health of my children. I would give my blood, donate any organ, and even give my very life for them. But I don't know that I would do it all for your children. My children mean more to me than any other children in the world and I would do for them what I would not do for any others. So it is with your dream! My dream won't motivate you. But your dream will drive you to the ends of the earth.

- Link exchanges with other websites so that you get traffic from them and also get ranked higher by search engines

- Search Engine Optimize your website so that it ranks high in the search engines

The final piece of the puzzle for a successful website is to drive traffic to it. You can do this also by purchasing PLR articles and modifying the words so that you can add your name to it. After that submit it to article directories and with your resource box at the bottom, people will read it and visit your website.

PLR articles are very important. You need it for the content of your website and to drive traffic to your website.

That's all you need to create a website you can put on the internet that makes you money on auto-pilot. It will sound overwhelming for beginners but there are easier ways.

We have a smashing internet site, but little or NO visitants. Now what is a internet site without traffic? It's similar to an old volume lying full of junk which nobody uses anymore.

So what must we do more or less to get this FREE TRAFFIC? You know, theres lots of Article Directories circulated in cyberspace which give Article Authors the chance to post their articles there for free with a free oneway to their websites.

Here are four simple steps you can to take to ensure your next email message preview pane design gets all the attention it should:

First, be aware that prior to Outlook 2003, the preview your subscriber sees runs horizontally along the foot of their screen. In Outlook 2003, this view is a vertical slice showing the left hand side of your content.

As a tip take a blank sheet of paper and then reveal the top third of your next message and then the left third. Does what you see in both instances seem interesting enough to entice your subscribers to click on?

Second, by allowing for the thinnest of newsletter mastheads, you should cram into these viewable snippets as much content as you can. Plus, if this content tells your subscriber exactly what your message contains, then the chances of them opening it increase even further.

Third, don't have too many images cluttering the preview space. By default, my version of Outlook 2003 suppresses all images sent to me in HTML messages. And finally the smart newsletter designers use images sparingly in this top part. But is that true? I think not. The article states, “In August 2009, 276.9 million people used email across the U.S., several European countries, Australia and Brazil, according to Nielsen Co., up 21% from 229.2 million in August 2008.” A 21% increase seems to me that email does still rule, even if other channels are increasing their share of traffic.

This isn’t a horse race with only one winner. What is happening and will continue to happen is that people and companies will begin to segment their messages and target audiences by communications channel. You may make a new business connection using a 140-character Tweet, but it’s likely that you will build the relationship with a deeper discourse that email – and the old-fashioned letter – allows.

Also, there will always be an element of the consuming public, possibly your target audience, that isn’t jumping on the social media bandwagon, at least not now. They don’t want to be force fed with small bites of Tweets. They will stick with old-fashioned email, thank you.

Since March, we have been reporting about some Google AdWords ads that appear to be displaying above the 25 character title limit. Back in March, I was told by Google that this is a bug, but Google was wrong. At the end of March, I probed Google about this again and Google confirmed, that in some cases, the AdWords title may exceed the 25 title character limit.

A new WebmasterWorld thread brings this topic back to life, where we now have AdWords representatives actually telling advertisers how they can realize longer titles in the AdWords ads. For example, this advertiser wanted to have the title "Virtual Assistant Training," but it is 26 characters. So to get around this, he/she uses dynamic keyword insertion to get there. If you search for Virtual Assistant Training you may see an ad with the full 26 character title. I attached a picture, to prove it.

There are many issues with using dynamic keyword insertion. Specifically the ad simply might not work all the time, plus the title might not always match the ad description, amongst other issues. But it is worth testing this out to see if it leads to any increase in your click through rate and, ultimately, quality score.

I was at a conference for event planners last Wednesday, and I was surprised in a session about social media that I was the only one using a blog, Twitter or Facebook to market a conference. There must have been 100+ people in the room.

The were all locked into the old, expensive ways of promoting their businesses, yet seemed anxious to get a grip on social media.

That got me thinking that there is an opportunity there to run seminars for all of these verticals that would jump at the chance to pay for a half day primer.

Then I came to my senses and realized I don’t have time to launch a new project like that. However, a great resource came to mind: Mari Smith.

Despite all the predictions last year about online advertising's solidity in the face of recession, the new thinking is that it will remain positive as other ad categories rack up declines. BernsteinResearch's Jeff Lindsay's call that global online ad spend will grow only 5.9 percent?4.1 percent in the U.S. and 7.2 percent overseas?is slightly more optimistic than the recent spate of downward revisions by other analysts. Earlier this week, Veronis Suhler said it expected web ad dollars to rise only 4.9 percent over 2008, on a total ad spend slide of -0.4 percent and yesterday, IDC said (sub req.) indicated that it would probably halve its previous 10 percent growth forecast for online ads when it releases its full 2009 outlook in next month. Still, analysts like UBS' Matthieu Coppet have issued more dire prospects for online revenues this year, as calling for a 1.4 percent rise over last year.

Interestingly, Lindsay is more bearish than Veronis Suhler on total ad spend, anticipating a 1.7 percent drop in the U.S. and an 8.3 percent fall worldwide. Looking at particular segments, in line with other industry observers, Bernstein says paidsearch will remain the largest online ad sector for thenext five years, accounting for 35 percent of all global online ad spend this year. Worldwide, search will grow 11.3 percent (up 11.4 percent in the U.S. and with 26.6 percent gains in China).

Yesterday, Yahoo announced new ad solutions for advertisers to better target and reach potential customers. I wrote about the news at Search Engine Land, but let me sum it up here quickly.

Yahoo is offering three new offerings:

Search Retargeting, which gives advertisers the ability to target display advertising based on user search activities;
Enhanced Retargeting, which allows advertisers to deliver dynamically generated display ads across the Yahoo! network based on user activity on an advertiser's site; and
Enhanced Targeting capabilities for search advertising, including ad scheduling and demographic targeting within search.

Advertisers can use search data to target display ads to them on other properties. This is in the realm of merging search ads with behavioral ads. Plus, Yahoo will be joining Google and Microsoft in giving marketers the ability to target search ads based on time of day (day parting) and using demographic data such as gender, age, income and so on.

To my surprise, the discussion around this news at WebmasterWorld is mostly positive. I would have thought that marketers would be skeptical and a bit sarcastic in their discussion about the new offerings. But I was wrong, marketers seem excited about the news.

These are tough economic times, so retailers are launching their Black Friday specials weeks early to motivate budget-conscious buyers. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Barack Obama, flush with cash and ramping up his advertising in the final weeks before the November 4 election, is making U.S. political history by placing the first presidential campaign ads in online video games.

The Democratic Illinois senator is using the Internet ads, featured in 18 games through Microsoft Corp's Xbox Live service, to promote his online voter registration and early balloting drive in 10 battleground states, a campaign spokesman said on Wednesday.

Unprecedented in U.S. presidential politics, the video game buy is targeted mainly at young adult males who are difficult to reach through more traditional campaign advertising.

"The 18-to-34-year-old male is the mainstream demographic for the hard-core video gamer," said Van Baker, an analyst for Gartner Inc., a technology market research firm in San Jose, California. "They're hard to get to because they don't watch much TV and they don't read a lot, so it's a good venue to get that segment."

The ads appear in games as banners or billboards with an image of Obama, the slogan "Early voting has begun," and a reference to his VoteForChange.com Web site. The site allows users to register online to vote, obtain absentee voter information and find a polling location.

Polls consistently have given Obama, 47, an edge over Republican rival John McCain, 72, among younger voters.

Far from turning his back on more conventional media, however, Obama's campaign last week said he planned to make a prime-time pitch to voters October 29 in a 30-minute ad slated to run on two broadcast networks, CBS and NBC.

Putting aside whether we're actually in a recession, or not, I think it's safe to say that the "R" word is on everyone's mind.

Here's how it is supposed to work: You walk into a movie theater, the movie theater sets your mobile phone to vibrate for you. You stroll into a museum, the museum disables the flash on your camera or disables your camera altogether. You get too close to the cockpit, any wireless device at risk of interfering is shut off.

The idea is to enforce a set of manners in public places because yes, that dude's phone going Disco Inferno while George Clooney is trying to say something charming is highly annoying, and because yes, nobody should be able to take embarrassing pictures of you in the locker room just to upload them to the Internet.

That's wrong, wrong, wrong.

TechDirt's Mike Masnick, who tips us off to the patent application, is critical of the idea, describing it as the next generation of digital rights management (DRM), which is "restricting what people can do with the technology they own."

Ars Technica's Joel Hruska thinks that position is alarmist and will be glad of the enforced etiquette if it prevents problems as described. But Hruska is missing a couple of important points.

In polite society, manners are generally optional. It's illegal to streak down the street or peep on someone, but there's no law that says you can't blow your nose on your shirt tail or that you have to cover your mouth when you cough. Technology like this would, in effect, force your hand to your mouth, which would be a kind of assault. "Manners" aren't mandated, they're voluntary actions of mutual respect, and sometimes they are arbitrary social status displays. It is precisely because one doesn't have to show manners that makes manners great and appreciated when they appear.
If comparing it to DRM is "alarmist," wait until the conspiracy theorists get a hold of it. Couldn't get photographic evidence of that government injustice that happened in broad daylight on a public street? Obviously, G-Men were jamming cameras—and any other type of recording/detecting device—within a certain radius. Pictures or didn't happen, so they say in comment sections all around the blogosphere.

It seems unnecessary and unsettling that a third party could, on whatever terms or definitions of "manners" they apply, interfere with otherwise law-abiding citizens' use of their own property. It's a dangerous power game to play, where people are no longer asked to do something but are commanded by some vague authority with some vague or arbitrary definition of proper behavior.
